Judith Clingan AM, BA, Dip.Mus.Ed, born 1945, has devoted her life to helping as many people as possible to enjoy making music. She studied voice, bassoon and composition at the Canberra School of Music, and music education at the Kodály Institute in Hungary. She has composed many choral and music theatre works, principally for her performing group Gaudeamus, which brought her national and international recognition. In 1991 she became involved in Steiner schools, in which singing is a daily norm in every classroom. She was commissioned by the Orana Steiner School, Canberra, to write a book of songs for Steiner schools – Songs of the Tree of Life brings together Kodály-based sequencing with Steiner-based content. Since then she has travelled around Australia and the world, endeavouring to inculcate good pitch and sol-fa skills into Steiner classroom teachers. Her 2020 publication Together provides teachers and choral directors with graded repertoire containing sol-fa syllables.
